This is an advocacy group for Maine voters who expect their government to respect both the Constitution and the citizens of Maine. Respect Maine is representing their members in a lawsuit against Maine's ruling trifecta, challenging the constitutionality of the Legislature’s presiding officers' parliamentary maneuvers leading up to Governor Mills' pre-arranged proclamation ordering the Maine Legislature into an unconstitutional special session. Several elected legislators – including co-plaintiffs Representatives Shelley Rudnicki and Randall Greenwood – have also joined with Respect Maine in defending Maine’s Constitution.
A year ago, Republicans were negotiating for a bipartisan state budget, but President Jackson and Speaker Talbot Ross chose to pass a partisan, no-compromise budget. To avoid a Democrat-incurred government shutdown, the Legislature had to adjourn almost immediately after passing the budget – also after voting to not reconvene in special session. Governor Mills' proclamation (helpfully edited by Senator Jackson's Chief of Staff) voided that second legislative vote. On May 8th, the Maine Supreme Court heard arguments and is expected to announce their decision in a few weeks.
